Held back from their debut album, the inclusion of the track, originally released a few years back, hammers home what Raving Pop Blast are all about. Their proto-punk garage groove is a great addition with Snatch It Back. But straight after we’re back with Leathers. It’s a break from the usual crunching garage sound that dominates the set for a more laid-back 80s new-wave vibe that glides along wonderfully. Simple in its delivery, it’s a pure earworm and sets things up nicely for The Che Men‘s Mill Hill. Pure freakbeat at its finest.ĭavid & The Lynched are up next with Hey-Hee-Hey! Released last year as a single on Burnett’s Records (and one I played at the time of my From The Garage radio show), it’s great to hear it again here. After The Charles Napiers‘ groovy Cantina-based psych-surf instrumental song The Sinister IV, we drop into the hazy sound of Sweeden’s The Beet Freaks‘ Miss Me. They’ve been around on the scene for decades, recalling the like of The Cynics in their attitude. For those not familiar with the Sheffield garage-revival greats, this is a great place to start. They start things off this time with the crunching fuzz and organ stabbing of The Mourning After‘s Gobbledygook. Their Rebels series is always one to watch out for and Volume 4 just might be their best yet, featuring a few of our favourites of the current crop of UK-based (and beyond!) garage bands. Raving Pop Blast are one of those great underground garage labels that keep the embers burning, the life glowing continuously within, shining a light on a scene that is forever bubbling under the mainstream, a thread that runs up and down the country, tight-knit and coherent, bringing together some of the best garage bands of the moment. Raving Pop Blast return with volume 4 in their Rebels series, a massive run through 17 rising and re-risen modern garage, psych and indie-pop greats…including some of Louder Than War’s current favourites.
